November Updated News Roundup
Hughs NewsNEW NEWS CHANNEL

Well folks I am back and I know that many of you really miss my regular column in the Guardian, which sadly closed and very quickly last month after many years as a newspaper in our area and serving Briton Ferry.
This regular column Hugh's News will appear every month with updated information each week and your news and all about Briton Ferry.
You can either email this site or visit the Briton Ferry Town Council website, which is http://britonferrycouncil.org.uk
I am updating this site today, November 19.

BRITON FERRY HOLDS UP IN STORMS

In severe storms which have lashed Britain these past weeks and more over the weekend, we have been keeping a close watch on Briton Ferry and especially the areas prone to flooding in the past in the older lower part of Briton Ferry.Heavy surface water gathered in Regent Street subway, but not serious and with deeper flooding under the Villiers Street and Church Street subway bridge. With the heavy rain and storms, tested to the limit, so far the system has held.As I have said before, if nothing had been done so far to the system in Briton Ferry we would have been under water and properties threatened. Both Neil Williams on the Briton Ferry West site and my website will be keeping a close eye on the weather and especially our town here in Briton Ferry.

ROAD AND URBAN PROGRAMME

The work on the street resurfacing programme is now complete for round one in Briton Ferry.
Of course it is good to see streets and side roads not resurfaced for many years and some well overdue work on pavements.
Streets and roads not yet resurfaced like George's Row and Wern Bank will be tackled in the next round of the programme.
Part of this programme is looking at replacing street signs worn and old and some seating at certain spots.

SUPPORT THE BUSES AND TRAINS

I know that parking is always a problem and we all know there are three cars to some houses.
Part of it is common sense when we need buses to clear on routes that they use.
Despite cuts in bus services in Neath Port Talbot from December 8, I am assured that our services in Briton Ferry will continue to run.
Do support our public transport, the two bus companies, First Cymru and South Wales, Hoggans. At the same time although the service is sparse, do support the train service serving Briton Ferry both to Swansea and Cardiff and connecting to long distance services operated by Arriva Trains Wales.

LIGHTS ON FOR CHRISTMAS

The Briton Ferry Town Christmas lights will be switched on by town Mayor Hugh James and accompanied by Father Christmas and elf helpers, with the support of the old fire brigades on Friday November 20 at 6.00pm.
All local schools are taking part and singing carols, supported by Briton Ferry Silver Band.
Father Christmas will be handing sweets out to the children and Santa will arrive in Briton Ferry on board a vintage fire engine or engines. The parade will start from the Community Centre at about 5.30pm and make its way up Shelone Road, Regent Street West, Llansawel Close, Villiers Street, Hunter Street, Ritson Street and onto the main road at the library to greet the many children and parents expected. The feeling of pre-Christmas glow and spirit will start up with the big switch on at 6.00pm by town mayor Hugh. This event is growing every year and important for our town and community.

BRUNEL DVD IS COMPLETED AND A NEW YEAR COMMUNITY LAUNCH PLANNED

A new DVD produced for the Brunel Dock Group has just been completed by local film producer Jason May.
The DVD is based on how Brunel was invited to Briton Ferry to undertake his project in the early 1850's by local business people.
Members of the Briton Ferry Musical Theatre and Briton Ferry Little Theatre and the support of the local library were involved.
The DVD is narrated by Hugh James.
The photo shoots really bring the best out of Briton Ferry and especially our water front area and dock and Jersey Park.

WARD BOUNDARIES CHANGE PLAN

There is a consultation document out on planned ward boundary changes across Wales, including Briton Ferry.Briton Ferry Town council and other organisations as well as the two ward members for Briton Ferry East and West have expressed their concern about a possible merger with Baglan..Frankly I don’t think this is ever going to work, Briton Ferry and Baglan are so different in many ways.I will keep you updated.
